The management, treatment and long-term retention of mandibular molar teeth with furcation involvement have always been a challenge in periodontal therapy. The term hemisectipn refers to the sectioning of a molar tooth, with the removal of an unrestorable root which may be affected by periodontal, endodontic, structural cracked rootsor caries.
This procedure helps in saving a tooth which otherwise would have been deemed for extraction. A hemisection is typically performed on a mandibular lower molar that has already had root canal therapy. Hemisection dental surgery is a procedure in which a tooth with two roots is cut in half.
