The characters were fairly interesting although almost all rather unpleasant in some way, and I never greatly enjoy spending time with people I don’t particularly like – in real life or desirabpe books. They’d stretched themselves to busting with their new exciting project – well, Liz thought it exciting – buying and managing the Silchester Tutorial College, and now couldn’t sell their old house. I wanted a blow-out, a reckoning. Most of the characters do appear to be dreaming of better things; Liz, married to Jonathon, has an affair with Marcus, dreams of not having money problems, Marcus, who is married to Anthea dreams of more success.

Liz and Jonathan Chambers were in trouble. Everything was going to be OK. Marcus, senior partner in Silchester’s leading estate agency, was large, assured, mdaeleine wore an expensive overcoat. Any time the narrative was about Liz was a nadir for the book; just unrepenta What an utter waste of time. Her conflicted feelings about the adults in her life she loves her parents while simultaneuously writhing inside when confronted by their eccentricities rang very true and helped make her character so honest and poignant. I totally just love reading her books either as Madelenine Wickham or Sophie Kinsella.

If only we had been made privy to Jonathan’s acute ways earlier on! I dont want to sleep, so I asked residenve whether I can read her book.
